Abstract

Title: The Emerging Role of AI Agents in Cybersecurity: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions
Abstract: AI agents are emerging as a significant development in cybersecurity, extending the role of artificial intelligence from isolated prediction and decision-support tasks toward more adaptive and goal-oriented security operations. By combining reasoning, contextual awareness, interaction with digital tools, and multi-step task execution, AI agents have the potential to strengthen cyber defense in areas such as threat monitoring, cyber threat intelligence, vulnerability management, threat investigation, Security Operations Center support, and incident response. Their ability to process large volumes of security information, correlate events across multiple sources, and support timely responses offers opportunities to improve the speed, scalability, and consistency of cybersecurity operations.
At the same time, the adoption of AI agents introduces important challenges related to reliability, transparency, data quality, privacy, security, accountability, and the level of autonomy that should be granted in security-critical environments. Inaccurate decisions, poorly controlled automated actions, and limited interpretability may create additional operational risks if appropriate safeguards are not established. Current research therefore increasingly emphasizes trustworthy and human-supervised approaches, particularly for security-critical decisions and actions, while investigating how different levels of autonomy can be introduced safely. Future progress will depend on improving the reliability of agent-based systems, establishing effective governance and evaluation mechanisms, defining appropriate levels of human control, and developing evidence-based approaches for integrating AI agents safely into real-world cyber defense environments.
